First world needs?

Been wanting to blog on an article I read in Sunday about subsidaries for middle income families ie, families whose incomes are 2k and above. While I can empthatise that middle income families do have financial difficulties, coming from one myself, I cannot comprehend why our ministers are pushing for a change in subsidary rules.

Their reason being, children from these families shouldn't be deprived of the chance to go for say, an educational overseas trip organised by the school or be made to give up their enrichment classes because their family has fallen onto hard times. I was baffled that not 1 but at least 3 MPs were in favour of this change. What is our country coming to? Have we become so affluent that luxuries like these have became a basic necessity like shelter and food?

Why should tax payers money go into funding all these extra curricular activities? If these children do not have the financial means to afford such luxuries, then don't! Why does the state have to bear the cost of all these?

As it is, families from lower income families aren't getting enough help (Yes, even in first world Singapore, we have people who are actually starving). It is simply beyond me why our MPs are even for that motion.

While I understand that they want to be seen as compassionate and humanitarian, we have to be rational!

Puts a whole new meaning to the term 'nanny state' doesn't it? Next, we'll have laws that will subsidise car buyers and who knows, even private property! Holiday anyone?

What a country we live in....
